Music Requirements: Candidate must pass the Institute of Music audition and placement tests
Performance Audition Three classical pieces of contrasting styles. Major, melodic minor and harmonic minor scales; chromatic scales; arpeggios in all keys (voice majors are exempted from this).
Aural/ Practical skills test Sight-reading, open-score reading, playing from simple figured bass, repeating a melody, a rhythmic phrase and chord progressions from memory, as well as singing intervals.
Theory test Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads and inversions, roman numeral analysis, time signatures, grouping of notes and rests, transposition, diminished and seventh chords, open score, cadences, lead sheet symbols and Italian / German / French terms.
Listening test Identification of a range of musical elements such as tempi, textures, dynamics, timbres and rhythms by listening and responding to brief, recorded musical extracts of both classical and contemporary styles.
